Top 5 Mistakes When Applying for a Schengen Visa Process ⚠️

Updated: Aug 17

Navigating the Schengen visa process can feel overwhelming, especially for those unfamiliar with the requirements and procedures. If you are a UK resident planning to travel to Europe, understanding the ins and outs of the Schengen visa application can save you time, money, and stress. This guide will provide you with the ten most common mistakes applicants typically make, and expert tips to make your visa application as smooth as possible.

(1) Not ensuring the validity of your residence documents.

You must demonstrate your intention to return to the place of your residence. If you’re not a citizen of the country of residence, you should ensure your residence documents are valid - otherwise it’s a straightforward rejection.

⚠️ ⚠️ ⚠️ Do not let your documents expire.

(2) Your profile may not make big difference,

even if you travelled to 50+ countries and hold/held visas for locations like US or Canada etc, and were never deported/banned/denied entry.

It only matters if it relates to countries within Schengen area.

(3) Mixing business with personal.

For example, if you own a business and try to use your company to sponsor your family’s visas, in the eyes of the consulate that does not make sense unless they are formally employed by your company. So, you should sponsor your family members using your private bank account only.

⚠️ ⚠️ ⚠️ Be clear with your documents.

(4) GHIC card does not count as a travel insurance.

As part of your Schengen visa application, you will be required to submit evidence of your insurance policy or certificate.

The free Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) gives you the right to access emergency state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in those countries.

However, it is important to note that a GHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance. It will not cover any private medical healthcare or costs, such as mountain rescue in ski resorts, being flown back to the UK, or lost or stolen property.

Medical insurance for Schengen visas must meet the following criteria:

⚠️ A minimum coverage of at least 30,000 Euros.

⚠️ It should cover all member states of the Schengen Area, including countries you do not intend to visit.

⚠️ It should cover any expenses which might arise in connection with repatriation for medical reasons, urgent health attention and/or emergency hospital treatment or death.

(5) Not providing detailed plans in your itinerary.

Providing a travel itinerary for a Schengen visa application helps demonstrate the purpose and duration of your trip, your financial ability to cover the stay, and your organised travel plans, reducing the risk of visa misuse or overstaying. It shows you have a planned visit with confirmed bookings and a way to leave the Schengen area before your visa expires.

List what you're actually going to do, logically and realistically.

⚠️ ⚠️ ⚠️ The main thing is honesty.

(6) Weak or missing cover letter

You need to clearly explain why you're going and how your plans make sense.

👌 Tip: Always state:

  • detailed (but not too detailed) itinerary,

  • purpose,

  • sources of funding,

  • ties to the country of residence.

(7) Suspicious or inconsistent bank activity

❗“Sudden” deposit of large funds right before applying? That’s a 🚩.

👌 Tip: Use consistent, real bank activity for the last 3 months. Main current account (where salary drops in) + savings account should be sufficient.

❗ If you are applying for a business visa, ensure employer invitation letters demonstrate intention of the company to cover trip expenses.

❗👌 Ensure to demonstrate possession of the amount of at least €200 x N trip days in your personal accounts.

(8) Poor travel plan or unrealistic itinerary

Example: 7 countries in 10 days. Looks fake or unfeasible. 🏃‍♀️‍➡️🏃‍➡️

👌 Tip: Show realistic, booked plans with logical flow.

(9) Documents in wrong language or format

Submitting Russian-only docs to a German consulate? Rejection straightaway.🙅🙅🙅

👌 Tip: Translate what’s needed or export documents in English, and follow each consulate’s formatting rules.

(10) Applying to the wrong country (not main destination)

Planning to spend most of your trip in France but applied via Spain? Risky.

👌 Tip: Apply where you’ll spend the most days or first entry (with caution).

One more thing to remember: even if your visa application is successful, it does not fully guarantee your entry into the Schengen area. 👌 Tip - make sure to have the same pack of documents with you to be ready for the checks on the arrival border (flights/return transport confirmation, hotel reservations, medical insurance, invitation letters at least). Happy travels!
